Study in sanguine and charcoal of a bas-relief from the Cathedral of Orvieto

Peccato originale Duomo di orvieto studio a carboncino e sanguigna

In this article we talk about:

The bas-relief depicting the original sin carved on the facade of the Cathedral of Orvieto dates back to the end of the 13th century and is probably the work of Lorenzo Maitani.
It is part of the stone decorations of the facade of the Cathedral, wonderful examples of Italian Gothic sculpture.

For the study of the bas-relief of the original sin I decided to try two different techniques: charcoal and sanguine.

From a black and white photo of the work I carried out the transposition of the drawing with the squaring technique, and then I created shapes and chiaroscuro in charcoal and sanguine, then highlighting the highlights with a white pastel. All on sepia-toned paper.

It was then really exciting, a few months later, to find myself in front of the imposing and wonderful Cathedral of Orvieto and see with my own eyes the beautiful bas-relief that I had observed so much to reproduce it.
